Weighted Blankets

Some of you may have heard of weighted blankets.  I had seen posts on Facebook regarding them, and I had even seen various videos that explained the benefits of them.  I was curious about these claims.  Occasionally I have anxiety which manifests itself mostly when I try to rest.  When I try to lay down to go to sleep, I feel like I have a million little currants of electricity running through every part of my body.  This sensation does not allow me to sleep well or even fall asleep with any ease. Weighted blankets sounded like a viable option to a solution.

I contacted the owner of Purple Tulip Quilts and discussed my symptoms with her.  She informed me that she was confident her blankets would help me.  I went ahead and placed my order.  Within the agreed upon time frame my custom ordered blanket arrived.  I was able to choose the fabric type and fabric design.  I went with a John Deere themed cotton.

Even though I was aware of the weight of the blanket, I didn’t think of how heavy it would really be, especially when packaged in a box.  Delivery day was an eye-opener. I also started to question what my comfort level would be because of the initial awkwardness of the blanket.

The weight of these blankets come from plastic pellets, which are sewn into individual squares. This ensures that the weight is evenly dispersed at all times.  Because the pellets don’t shift, I realized that I needed to start with first setting the blanket on my feet and legs then over my body up to as high as I was comfortable with it.  I slept with it the first night of it’s arrival.

Surprisingly, the blanket doesn’t provide much for warmth, so I slept with it under my regular bedding so my husband could sleep normally.  At first, I didn’t notice much more than the weight restricting my movement.  I could feel my anxiety kicking in (not a surprise for me since I had been dealing with it every night for a while).  After a couple of minutes, I noticed that the sensation of electricity dissipated.  I could no longer feel my anxiety attack and was able to fall into a restful sleep much quicker than I had previous nights.

Towards the end of my rest, I did push the blanket off of myself, so I could move around easier.  I continued to use the blanket on a nightly basis until I was no longer dealing with my anxiety.

Occasionally I will use the blanket when I notice the sensation of an anxiety attack coming on.  I have also used it on and off as needed for sleep.  I love my blanket, and I feel so blessed to know that if and when I need it, I have it.

Pictured above is a weighted lap pad.  It is smaller and much easier to use if you plan on just sitting rather than sleeping with it.

Weighted blankets are a product that I truly believe in. I recommend them to my friends when I see the need.  There are many more reasons to use a weighted blanket other than anxiety.  Anxiety is my reason for needing one.

Conditions Weighted Blankets Can Help With:

ADHD/ADD, Alzheimer’s, Anxiety Disorder, Asperger’s Syndrome, Autism or ASD, Bi-Polar Disorder, Brain Trauma Injuries, Cerebral Palsy, Dementia, Down’s Syndrome, Epilepsy, Fetal Alcohol Syndrome, Insomnia, Parkinson’s Disease,  Pervasive Development Disorder, Restless Leg Syndrome, Rett Syndrome, Sensory Integration, Sensory Processing Disorder, and Tourette’s Syndrome.

If you, your child or a loved one is suffering from any of these conditions I highly recommend the use of a weighted blanket.  Weighted blankets should never be used on children under the age of two.  Although you do have the ability to decide for yourself if you want more weight, I would recommend that you stay within the guidelines given.  Remember that these are custom blankets and do take time to make.  They are a real blessing to those in need.

This is my blanket on my daughter’s bed to show size only.  My children are not allowed to use this blanket.
